Near El Escorial, we find the wonderful La Herreria forest, a splendid oak grove, in which chesnut, maple and ash trees grow as well, besides other species.

Protected since the 16th century, it is well preserved. In it, due to this protection, we can find robust and large oak trees. All this, in great contrast with most oak groves - which look really pitiful-  in these mountains, harmed by humans for many centuries.

The forest is crossed by an easy paved path. In some areas the chesnuts are really abundant.

In some areas the forest is really deep and almost impenetrable.

We find ancient chesnut trees, probably planted by man in far-off times.

Maple trees add colour, with their intense red leaves.

Vista general del bosque. El otoño en todo su esplendor.

General view of the forest. Autumn in its greatest splendour.

On the North face of the "Sierra de Ayllón", on the "Quesera" mountain pass we find one of the  3 "official" beech forests in the "Sistema Central" mountains. I say "official" because in several valleys of these mountains some other small beech tree groves, which are completely unknown by most people, exist.

Surely the "Pedrosa" beech forest is not as famous as his brothers, Tejera Negra and Montejo. Yet it is not less attractive, but quite the reverse: this forest, especially in Autumn, is one of the most beautiful places in these mountains in  the centre of Spain.

In the lowest part of the mountain we find a deep oak tree forest, which is replaced as we ascend by beech tree groves, together with rowans and holly trees.

The beech trees occupy the areas next to the brooks, where the soil is deeper and  more fertile, and keeps the moisture better.

In this photograph we understand why it is called "la Pedrosa" (rocky), since the beech trees grow in stony places on these rough slopes.

Mosses and lichens grow on the branches and trunks. We plunge into a scenery more typical of Northern Europe. Humidity and the dim Autumn light create a really beautiful atmosphere.

We ascend to the "Quesera" mountain pass to admire a scenery almost unaltered by human beings. On the higher areas of the beech grove, small trees grow and colonize new territory. Definetely this forest is everything but "relict" as we can often hear and read in plenty of scientific texts. You´d better travel than read to know the reality of a place.
